The modern identification of fungal species using DNA barcoding is the basis for a wide range of applications, such as biodiversity studies, fungal diagnostics and quality assurance of production processes.

DNA barcoding is a reliable method that focuses on the standardised analysis of defined gene segments, so-called marker regions. These marker regions enable the precise identification of fungi and other groups of organisms. The required DNA can be extracted from fresh or dried fungi, herbarium material or pure cultures. After extraction, targeted amplification of the desired gene segment is carried out using PCR, followed by sequencing. The unambiguous identification of species is then carried out by comparing the sequences with reference databases.
